Hi everybody, I was wondering if anyone can tell me what is the average credit score in California. I recently moved there and I am considering getting a credit card but I am not sure which option to choose. I heard that for many cards, your current credit score is taken into consideration when applying for a credit card and will influence the outcome of the application, so I would like to have a general idea regarding the credit scores in California, so I know which options are feasible for me. Thank you very much for your help!

Hello Jack, I’m sorry but I’m not sure what the credit score is in particular states. However, if this helps at all I know that in U.S. last year the average FICO score was 695 and the average Vantage score was 673. There must be some more detailed state-by-state information around, but I could only find this now, I’ll try to search more later and let you know if I find something specific for California.

Hey there, I made a quick search online and it seems that credit reporting companies Experian and Mortgage Marvel computed these average scores and the one for California is 754 which seems to be the highest from the U.S.! However, these scores are calculated from samples from the entire population, so better take it with a grain of salt, it might not be representative for the entire population…

Yea, it seems quite tricky, I just searched about this and the first hit on Google was another number – 677. From which source did you get yours, Adam? Anyway, I guess the best thing to do for finding out clear data regarding these things is to ask your own bank. Perhaps they are more reliable than internet sources…But who knows after all?

Hey guys I found on another credit card forums for example that the city Riverside from California has one of the WORST average Vantage scores, 624

So it seems it also depends on the particular city etc. You may be below the average in one California city and much above in another. So I agree, better just ask tell your bank your score and ask them if it’s sufficient to get a credit card/loan.

There must be different policies around for different banks, so it will all depend on this.

And if they say no, don’t despair, just try another bank, you’ve got nothing to lose!
